Week 3 Assignment

Step 4 Comprehension Reading

You've Got Mail, But it's Mostly Junk

Step 4a Finding Supporting Points

Look again at the main points from the paragraphs. Group these into 4-5 groups in which the points in the group closely relate to one another.
  • Return to your annotated copy of the article
  • Make a list of all the main points from all the paragraphs
  • Pair up like ideas with like, such as those having a similar point of view or discuss similar issues
  • Rewrite these combined points in your own words using several sentences to adequately express the complete idea
  • You should come up with at least 5 major points that thoroughly discuss the topic of the article
  • Some of these points will relate to the problem the author addresses, some to the solution to the problem
  • You should use quotes if you use the text word-for-word, and you must explain the quotes

Step 4b Revising the Thesis

The thesis must address the following:
  • States one main point about the topic
  • States a problem and a solution
  • Is an assertion, not a question
  • Has 4 -5 supporting points to confirm it
  • Starts with the Readiness Lab Format
Apply this test: What do all the major supporting points have in common? What they have in common is the thesis of the article.
